McGill

McGill is a census-designated place (CDP) in White Pine County, Nevada, United States. The population is listed at 1,068.

History

McGill was named for William N. McGill who sold part of his ranch property for the Steptoe Valley Mining and Smelter Company (Nevada Consolidated Copper Company) which led to McGill becoming a company town. The McGill Ranch Post Office was established in 1891.

The smelter and reduction plant was built in McGill during 1906 to 1908 to process copper ore that was mined in Ruth, NV approximately 7 miles west of Ely. After the mill was built the town was briefly known as Smelter.

McGill's peak economic period occurred during the early 1910's, when the town – then a company owned town – employed over 2000 people at the smelter. Like other mining towns, the people left when the smelter shut down in the 1970's.
